Miley Cyrus Calls Herself A Stoner: A Brief History Of Her Controversies

Miley CyrusMiley Cyrus is proving once again that she can't be tamed. (I know, I know, so 2010...)

For her 19th birthday last week, the starlet threw a fete at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with a number of famous faces in attendance, including friend Kelly Osbourne, who presented the birthday girl with one creative cake. As the sparkler-strewn confection was wheeled out, Miley was caught on tape (obtained by The Daily) saying, "You know you’re a stoner when friends make you a Bob Marley cake—you know you smoke way too much f---in’ weed."

The incident sparked plenty of headlines over the weekend, despite the fact that Kelly tweeted yesterday that the whole thing was a gag. "A JOKE! it makes me sick that @MileyCyrus so called 'friends' would sell her out and lead people 2 believe she is someone that she is not!" she wrote.

Even the most casual Miley observer can tell you that this is just the latest in a line of controversies involving the singing starlet. Let's take a look:

Photo flap
Way back in 2008, at the tender age of 15, Miss Cyrus was snapped by world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz for an issue of Vanity Fair in which she flashed—gasp!—her bare back and shoulders. Following the pictorial's publication, Miley released a statement saying, "I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

Photo flap redux
A few months later in 2009, Miley caused a stir with a very different sort of photo. This time, the teen was snapped slanting her eyes in what could be construed as a racist manner. Miley released a statement saying that she and her friends were simply "making a goofy face." But there was nothing goofy about what followed: a $4 billion lawsuit, which was eventually dismissed.

Pole 'Party'
A then-16-year-old raised eyebrows again at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards when she performed her hit "Party in the U.S.A." atop an ice cream cart, which just so happened to have a pole attached. Just so we're clear, dance + pole = pole dance (supposedly). Can we all agree, however, that this performance was probably one of the most chaste "pole dances" in history?

Salvia sitch
Perhaps Miley should consider a "no cameras allowed" policy for her 20th birthday. In another controversial party video shot on her 18th, Miley was filmed smoking a bong filled with salvia. Though the herb is legal in her home state of California, Miley was still embarrassed by the incident. She opened up to Marie Claire saying, "I'm not perfect. I made a mistake. I'm disappointed in myself for disappointing my fans."

Say what you will about Miley, at least the starlet is mature enough to cop to her mistakes. And for that, we can never be disappointed in her.

What do you think about Miley's latest "controversy." Is it much ado about nothing? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!
